Career to date:
Kenneth Henderson began his career in 1833 with Messrs George and Robert Milne, solicitors. He served an apprenticeship for 4 years and then joined Messrs Shiell and Small, solicitors. He entered the Eastern Bank in 1838 as a clerk, gradually working his way up to become principal teller in 1843. By January 1863, he held the post of Secretary. The Eastern Bank amalgamated with the Clydesdale Bank at this time.[22] Mr Henderson entered correspondence with the Directors of the Commercial Bank, who had no agency in Dundee. He was appointed as an agent and opened a branch of the Commercial Bank in Reform Street. He was popular with many of the merchants and manufacturers and soon established a large business.[22]
More information
Kenneth Henderson was born in Coupar Angus to Peter Henderson and Catharine Walker. He and his wife, Jane Pirie, had 5 daughters and 2 sons. His wife died in 1879, aged 57 years, when the family were living at Bellfield, Magdalen Green, Dundee.
When he retired in 1887 he was believed to be the oldest banker in the town, at the age of 69 years. He was entertained to a dinner and presented with a salver and jug.[22]
In his retirement he became a director of the Baldovan Orphanage (latterly the Lady Jane Ogilvy Orphanage) and also the Baldovan Asylum, which had been “Established in 1855 for the Treatment of Imbecile and Idiot Children.”[23]
